The PICTURE THIS_ Film Tech Conference is back on October 4. This year spotlighting the influence of AI, Virtual Production, and next generation technology on the independent film industry under the headline ‘Change of Everything’.

One day, six sessions, 17 speakers. The full programme for this year’s PICTURE THIS_ Film Tech Conference is out. This year with a big focus on the Nordics and European region spotlighting the impact of Virtual Production on the independent film industry with a diverse selection of top-tier cases and speakers from all over Europe, including Ukraine, Finland, United Kingdom and Denmark.

Join award-winning Norwegian cinematographer Jannicke Mikkelsen for a breakdown of the virtual cinematography behind Netflix release “Stowaway” (2021); and meet Felix Jorge, CEO and Creative Director of world-leading virtual art studio Happy Mushroom for exclusive insights on how the ‘virtual art department’ work with the production designer in a virtual production environment.

Join us on October 5th when we gather the industry LIVE ON-SITE at the National Film School of Denmark for a day of networking, knowledge, and best practices with brilliant digital pioneers from Denmark and abroad.

The Danish film industry is known for pushing above its weight, getting the absolute maximum out of the resources available to them. The second part of the PICTURE THIS_20 program is dedicated to exploring the experiences of some of the early adopters in the Danish industry, who are working with virtual production and real-time technology as tools for visualizing, communicating and budgeting - and basically making the filmmaking process more FUN!

What if you could bring any film location on set, put it on a giant LED screen, and capture all visual effects directly in-camera? Now you can. At PICTURE THIS_20 Emmy Award-winning Cinematographer and VFX Supervisor Sam Nicholson will share how LED screens and in-camera visual effects made the production of HBO series Run more cost-effective and efficient, and indie production company Treehouse Digital will demonstrate how they successfully applied similar tools and techniques to a minimal budget test shot.

In search of new ways to restart international film production and to make way for new artistic opportunities, the use of ‘virtual production’ is accelerating rapidly worldwide. But what exactly is virtual production, how will it change the filmmaking process, and why should indie filmmakers consider these tools and techniques? One of the major trends in filmmaking today is the move towards story world building: Creating an entire world space from which narratives can emerge on several platforms and abandoning the linear work process of the past (starting with the script, then the filming, then the post-production). The world building approach is more collaborative, more spherical, more interactive. But how is it done? Why? And where to start? Learn from case studies and experts with more than 25 years of experience.

PICTURE THIS_18 reveals full programme and BAFTA-winner and Academy Award-nominee, Habib Zargarpour, as keynote speaker. Zargarpour has created the real-time film-making tools and systems used in 'Blade Runner 2049', 'The Jungle Book' and the upcoming film 'Ready Player One', directed by Steven Spielberg. At PICTURE THIS_18, he will share his insights on the current paradigm shift of virtual film production and “why it’s bigger than you think”.

Writer and director Christine T. Berg and lead producer Drew Diamond from Entertainment Technology Center in Los Angeles join us at PICTURE THIS_ to talk about the creative and technical aspects of producing a live action short film in tandem with a highly technical, interactive virtual reality experience.
